You’re drained. You’re cranky. You’re over it.

But are you burned out… or are you actually depressed?

This isn’t some “are you sad or tired?” quiz. It matters. Because burnout and depression feel similar on the surface — but the root causes (and how to fix them) are totally different.

Let’s cut the fluff and break down burnout vs depression so you can stop guessing and start actually healing.

First, What Even Is Burnout?

Burnout is stress exhaustion, plain and simple. Usually work-related, sometimes life-related, but always overwhelming.
Think:

Can’t focus

Zero motivation

Irritability off the charts

Feeling like everything’s “too much”

You’re not necessarily hopeless, you’re just fried.

Burnout = You still want to care, but you literally can’t.

And Depression?

Depression goes deeper.

It’s not just about being tired of doing things. It’s the feeling that nothing matters, including you.
Common signs:

Numbness

Guilt or worthlessness

No interest in anything, even rest or joy

Isolation because you feel like a burden

Depression = You stop caring because it feels like nothing has meaning.

Where People Get It Wrong

A lot of people think burnout just becomes depression. Sometimes, yeah. But not always.

Some people get stuck in burnout cycles for years without it turning into depression. Others may seem “fine” on the outside but are battling deep clinical depression.

And here’s the kicker: you can have both. Burned out + depressed = extra spicy hell.

How to Handle Burnout

If you’ve identified your situation as burnout, it’s time to reclaim your energy — not your to-do list.

Try this:
→ Take a real break, not a “weekend with email”
→ Set hard boundaries at work/home
→ Rebuild a routine with micro joys (music, walking, literally staring at a plant)
→ Reduce stimulation — you’re overwhelmed, not broken

How to Handle Depression

This isn’t about “fixing your vibe” — it’s about healing from the root.

Try this:
→ Therapy or counseling — not optional, not weak
→ Consider seeing a psychiatrist if symptoms persist
→ Get sunlight. Seriously, it helps.
→ Move your body, even if it’s just standing on the balcony
→ Tell someone, even if you don’t know what to say

When to Call a Pro

Here’s your sign:

You’ve felt this way for more than 2–3 weeks

Nothing brings relief, not even rest

If that’s you — you don’t need to wait till it’s worse. Reach out. Now.

Figuring out burnout vs depression isn’t about labeling yourself — it’s about knowing what kind of help you actually need.

Burnout says, “I’m maxed out.”

Depression says, “I feel empty.”

Both are real. Both suck. But neither one means you’re weak.

When it comes to achieving a radiant glow and maintaining good health, many people focus on skincare routines and fitness plans. But what about the everyday choices we make that quietly sabotage our efforts? There are plenty of bad habits that affect beauty and health without us even realizing it. From how we sleep to what we eat, some of the most common lifestyle patterns can age us faster and compromise our well-being.

1. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Lack of quality sleep not only leaves you feeling drained, but it also shows on your face. Dark circles, puffiness, and dull skin can all be linked to poor sleep habits. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can increase the signs of aging and weaken your immune system. Sleep is when your body repairs itself, so skimping on rest affects both your internal health and outer glow. For dark circles, check out this post: How to Reduce Dark Circles and Puffiness Under Your Eyes

2. Smoking and Excessive Drinking

Smoking decreases oxygen flow to the skin and breaks down collagen, leading to premature wrinkles and a tired, uneven complexion. Alcohol, on the other hand, dehydrates the body and skin, making you look older and more worn out over time. Both habits also increase the risk of serious health conditions, including heart disease and cancer.

3. Neglecting Water Intake

One of the simplest bad habits that affect beauty is not drinking enough water. Hydration plays a crucial role in flushing out toxins, keeping your skin plump, and promoting healthy digestion. When you’re dehydrated, your skin may appear dry, flaky, or inflamed—and your body may feel sluggish.

4. Poor Diet Choices

Eating too much processed food, sugar, and unhealthy fats can cause inflammation, acne breakouts, and even hair loss. A diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats helps support clearer skin, stronger nails, and shiny hair. What you eat truly reflects on the outside, so nutrition shouldn’t be overlooked when considering habits that affect your beauty and health. For more on this, check out this post: The Impact of Nutrition on Your Skin and Hair

5. Skipping Sunscreen

Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature aging. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can harm your skin, leading to wrinkles, sunspots, and increased risk of skin cancer. Applying SPF daily is a must if you’re serious about avoiding bad habits that affect beauty.

6. Stress and Lack of Self-Care

Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can trigger breakouts, hair thinning, and even digestive issues. Over time, stress takes a toll on your mental and physical health, draining your natural vibrancy. Practicing mindfulness, taking breaks, and indulging in self-care routines can work wonders in reversing the effects.

Sometimes, it’s not just what you do to look and feel your best, but what you stop doing that makes the difference. Recognizing and eliminating the bad habits that affect beauty and health is a crucial step toward a more radiant, energized, and confident version of yourself. So, take a look at your daily routine—what might you need to let go of for the sake of both your looks and your well-being?

When the sun is blazing and the days feel endless, it’s easy to get swept up in the hustle of vacations, social gatherings, and packed calendars. But summer isn’t just about activity — it’s also the perfect time to pause, reconnect with yourself, and find simple, soothing rituals that keep you grounded. That’s where summer self-care comes in.

Here are some refreshing and restorative self-care ideas to help you stay cool, both physically and mentally, all summer long:

1. Start Your Mornings with a Cooling Routine

Swap the snooze button for a slow, intentional morning start. Begin with a glass of ice-cold lemon water, followed by a quick face mist or a jade roller kept in the fridge. Incorporating peppermint or cucumber-infused skincare can awaken the senses and help you feel fresh from the start.

2. Hydrate Creatively

Proper hydration is key to both your energy and mood. Elevate your water game by adding slices of citrus fruits, berries, or mint leaves. Herbal iced teas like hibiscus or chamomile also offer hydration with a calming twist — a small yet powerful summer self-care to keep your system happy and your skin glowing.

3. Create a Shady Sanctuary

Whether it’s a corner of your balcony, a garden nook, or just a cozy window seat, design a mini oasis where you can unwind during peak heat. Use light linens, comfy pillows, and a favorite summer playlist. This is your space to journal, read, or simply breathe.

4. Embrace Light Movement

Instead of intense workouts, opt for gentle activities like morning walks, sunset yoga, or swimming. These low-impact exercises keep your body moving without overexertion, while helping you connect with nature — a major mood booster.

5. Indulge in Cooling Foods

Think watermelon, cucumbers, leafy greens, and smoothies. Eating light and fresh supports digestion and helps you feel more energized. Treat yourself to occasional homemade popsicles with natural ingredients for a sweet, guilt-free reward.

6. Unplug and Reset

Summer is an ideal time to step back from screens. Take digital breaks during your weekends or evenings, and spend more time in the moment — whether it’s stargazing, cloud-watching, or having unhurried conversations with loved ones. This simple act of presence is at the heart of summer self-care.

At its core, self-care isn’t just about pampering — it’s about intentionally creating space for your well-being. And in the heat and chaos of summer, carving out these cool, mindful moments can help you stay centered amidst the noise.

So this season, take the time to slow down and savor the warmth. Whether it’s five minutes of deep breathing under the sun or an afternoon of lounging with a good book, let summer self-care be your guide to a more balanced, beautiful summer.

Aging might be a natural process, but there’s no reason you can’t take care of your face to age gracefully—almost as if you’re not aging at all!

We’ve compiled a list of 10 simple anti-aging skincare tips that, when combined, can help you age like fine wine.

Anti-Aging Skincare Tips

1. Manage Stress

All that negative energy and piled-up stress show on your face. So, please manage stress. Here’s a guide on how to manage stress effectively.

2. Facial Exercises

The best facial exercise is laughing! Watch all the funny shows you want to keep the blood flowing to your face. “Impractical Jokers” is a personal recommendation.

3. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Alcohol and cigarettes are often consumed together by many at clubs. Don’t do that. Avoid both, or you’ll have to face the price of looking older than you are.

4. Moisturize Daily

Keeping your skin moisturized is very important for an anti-aging boost. Try a moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid and ceramides to keep your skin hydrated and plump.

5. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover, revealing fresh, radiant skin. Use a gentle exfoliator 2-3 times a week to avoid irritation. Chemical exfoliants, like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), are great for promoting a smoother complexion.

6. Use Anti-Aging Products

You can use anti-aging products like retinoids. They might not show immediate effects, but over the long run, they are very helpful in reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

7. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep not only leads to healthier skin but also a healthier you, who then does more healthy things and eats more healthy food. Your sleep can literally make the difference between looking homeless and a Hollywood star.

8. Eat a Balanced Diet

Eat a balanced diet that provides all the nutrients your body needs. A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can promote healthy, youthful skin.

9. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key to keeping your skin plump and youthful. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain your skin’s elasticity and glow. Incorporating a hydrating serum, like hyaluronic acid, can also help your skin retain moisture.

10. Wear Sunscreen Daily

The sun is a major culprit in premature aging. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day can protect your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Remember, even on cloudy days, UV rays can still affect your skin.

And that’s it! You don’t have to take every tip to heart, but if you do, you’ll have glowing skin in no time!

Let’s face it—the modern world is hectic, especially if you’re working at a big corporation with a mountain of responsibilities. Rest for busy professionals might feel like a luxury rather than a necessity, but it’s crucial for your well-being.

Knowing what type of rest to take can drastically improve how you feel and function. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand and incorporate rest for busy professionals into your routine.

1. Active Rest

Active rest involves low-intensity activities that help recharge your body. It might sound counterintuitive, but even gentle exercises like stretching or a brisk walk can be incredibly restorative. Think of it as a way to keep moving without overexerting yourself.

2. Passive Rest

On the flip side, passive rest means complete inactivity. This is all about giving your body a break by doing nothing at all—just lying down or relaxing. It’s the perfect way to replenish your energy, especially after a long day.

3. Cognitive Rest

Intense mental work can leave you feeling burned out. To avoid this, take small breaks throughout your day. The Pomodoro Technique is a popular method: work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. This simple trick helps keep your mind fresh and focused.

4. Emotional Rest

Life can get overwhelming, and juggling responsibilities with relationships can drain your emotional battery. When you need a break, sometimes solitude is the best remedy. Spending time alone allows you to recharge and process your emotions.

5. Social Rest

While solitude is important, so is social interaction. Too much time alone can be stressful. Balance your solitary time with positive social interactions to keep your mood lifted. Connecting with friends and family can provide the support and energy boost you need.

6. Sensory Rest

In today’s world, we’re constantly bombarded with stimuli—from advertisements to screen time. Give your senses a break by unplugging from your phone and other devices. Spend some time in a quiet, calm environment to reduce sensory overload.

Putting It All TogetherThe key is balance. If you spend most of your time working or socializing, make sure to incorporate periods of solitude and physical activity. By blending different types of rest for busy professionals into your routine, you’ll maintain a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. Remember, rest isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for staying at your best.

Wake up in the morning, barely eat breakfast, rush to work, come back exhausted, and have no energy for the activities you want to do. Is this you? Are you stuck in such a perpetual loop? A lot of people are. This modern, monotonous life makes us forget who we are and that we exist in this world.

We become cogs in the system, functioning like robots. In such a hectic environment, just sitting down and staying calm for 30 seconds seems impossible. Our incredibly short attention spans have a negative impact on our lives. Our brains need rest, just like our bodies, and what better way to take mental rest than to meditate!

In this guide, we’ll shed some light on the practice of meditation, providing a simple guide that will make you feel lighter and give you a lot of mental clarity. So, let’s get into it.

Creating the Environment

mindfulness, spirituality and healthy lifestyle concept – woman meditating in lotus pose at yoga studio

Okay, so before we get started wity meditation, just need to make something clear, no, you don’t need to set up an elaborate environment to meditate. Heck, you can start meditating on the office chair you’re sitting on right now. But why not set the mood? It will also help you build a habit.

So, to create an environment, just find a spot or room where you won’t be disturbed, and get as comfortable as possible. Now, you can sit or lie down—either way works. Next, light up some incense sticks and play some calming music if you want to.

Meditate

Now the hard part in meditation: sitting down, and stopping the constant barrage of thoughts.

Basicaly, stop thinking. Well, that’s kind of wrong—you won’t ever stop thinking, not at this level. All you can do is let the thoughts go by. Think of it this way: you’re on a highway, and cars are going by.

You may look at the cars, but you don’t need to get into the nitty-gritty of the cars’ engines and stuff. Just like that, let thoughts pass by. Don’t analyze them. And most importantly, concentrate on your breath.

And that’s all there is to it. Do this for 10 minutes and see how you feel. Obviously, the first time won’t be perfect. But please, just add these ten minutes to your routine, ideally at the end of the workday, and see the difference in your mindfulness in a week. It’s a very powerful and cheap tool!

Learn a New Skill: Being out of work is hard! However, maybe this will offer you the perfect chance to change the course of your life, if you so desire. There are thousands of classes on line that teach skills. If you are currently unable to work, make time to develop a skill that has always been of interest to you. Take up woodworking, painting, drawing, photography or writing. Learn to play an instrument or improve your skill in an instrument you already have. Take notice of the things that are beautiful to you and find a way to make it into something more. For instance, if you love a specific photograph that hangs in your home try to put it on canvas. It may not be perfect, but it will take up some of your time and may bring you unexpected joy.

Tease your Brain: Try out a puzzle, learn a new board or card game. Do things away from the screen. For instance, if you enjoy figuring things out, learn how to change the oil in your car, or repair a mechanical issue. Start a blog or a YouTube channel on something you are passionate about. There are so many resources you can use to exercise your brain while away from work or spending time at home.

Many people find joy in music: Music makes people happy. Throw on some headphones or blast the radio while you are sitting around, running, dancing or even doing a chores. Music will instantly lift your mood. There are many opportunities to have a “private” concert with a favorite artist as people are taking to Instagram and Twitter to share their talents. Take advantage of this. Try a different genre of music that takes you on a journey, Spanish or French music, for instance, can transport you to another place. There are even orchestral performances that have free concerts throughout the next few months. There is no better time to be able to see these beautiful works of art than from your home office.

Podcasts: There are thousands of podcasts out there. You could probably get through a few of them from start to finish with this quarantine. Pick a few favorites to listen to when nothing else seems to be working. One of my favorites is My Favorite Murder. A comedy murder podcast. It takes a little getting used to, but if its your cup of tea, it will entertain for hours. You could also take up audio books. They are a great way to listen to your favorite books while working around the house, in the care or even as you are falling asleep. Your local library has an app that you can download and get audio books for free, or you can use one of the many services available with a subscription.

Get Your Virtual Tour On: There have been posts popping up all over the place with museums, farms, and even the Sistine Chapel offering free virtual tours. This a perfect way to exercise your mind and keep your spirits up by focusing on the beauty that exists in this world.

Be Grateful: I know its hard to do when we are all worried about our health, our jobs, the economy and the world in general. But take a minute to start a gratitude journal. Try to write down one thing a day. You may be surprised at everything you have to be grateful for.

Organize/Clean: Its about the time for spring cleaning. Take this extra “mandated” time at home to get rid of things that don’t bring you joy as Marie Kondo would suggest. Old paperwork, photos, books, etc. Create something with them or remove them from your life. When you take time to de-clutter your home, your mind will often take the journey as well and you are better able to focus on work, friends, family or whatever else matters most to you.

Make-up Tutorials: Again, there are thousands of make-up tutorials to occupy your time. You can go from frumpy work from home (like me) to glam in a matter of minutes. Give it a shot. You may just impress someone. Plus, despite how it feels, this won’t last forever, you will eventually get back to real life, and work.

Lose that weight you have been stressing about using exercise. No joke. You don’t get to see your crush for a month. Make that month matter. Exercise at home with these at home exercise videos for beginners or get more intense with videos for a more intermediate level. You can even try dancing. Get outside for a hike or run. There are so many options outside of the gym.

Make food at home and learn what you can about what is most nutritious for your body. While everyone has the same general guidelines, make decisions that work for you and your body. Use this month to eat healthier. There is not a pressing reason to go out to eat, so try to avoid it. Make food at home and learn what you can about what is most nutritious for your body. While everyone has the same general guidelines, make decisions that work for you and your body.

Find New Recipes: There are a million and one bloggers out there offering copy-cat recipes for your favorite menu items, healthier versions of your favorite foods, and brand new recipes you may have never even considered. This is an awesome time to up your cooking/baking game. Impress a significant other or spouse by creating a beautiful version of their favorite food, or find a new favorite. The possibilities are literally endless.

Learn to Garden: There is no better time to learn about gardening. This can prove beneficial to your health, and your food storage. Having healthy, home grown fruits and vegetables to eat will make a world of difference in your both your mental state and overall well-being. Even if you don’t think you have a green thumb, do some research and you may find a method that works for you. Create an indoor garden if you are renting or don’t have the space for a real outdoor garden.

Protect your face from getting dry skin this season, protect from the cold harsh elements. Basically, this year, keep your skin from becoming a dried up, parched, raisin face!

DRINK UP FOR DRY SKIN!

Flavor your H20 to make drinking water a more desirable thing to do all day!

I am going to start with the number one tip that you already know to do. You’ve heard it time and time again but drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated will do far more wonders for your face then any cream or technique that’s popular at the moment. Just like the rest of your body, your skin needs water, it’s an organ made up of cells which are made of water. Without water your skin will turn on you. It will become very tight and dry. When your skin becomes tight and dry it can form wrinkles so much easier. Wrinkles and dry skin is the enemy and the #1 antidote is right there at your fingertips…water! Now there is some debate on how much water you should drink, the old standard was always 8 glasses a day but that actually falls short from today’s standards according to IOM, the Institute of Medicine. An average of 11 cups per day for women and 15 cups for men is now considered the healthy mark. Unfortunately, the water you consume caters to all your other organs first so you really need to get that full amount so that it will fully hydrate you so that your skin gets the maximum benefit.

So how can you manage to keep track of all that water you are drinking? Well instead of tracking every drip just make sure to drink water with every meal and a few in between and this should keep you close. The best rule of thumb is to stay hydrated enough to not have to feel thirsty at some point during the day. Once your body is thirsty, it’s telling you that you left it dry a bit too long and that it’s not hydrated enough and needs water pronto.

HOT H20 is a NO NO for dry skin.

This one is one that I am personally guilty of doing. I like ridiculously hot showers. Ridiculously hot. Especially, when the weather is cold. The hot water warms up my body and even if I step out into an air conditioned area I still feel so warm but… it’s not helping me keep that dewy skin look that I love so much. Too much hot water helps evaporate your skin’s natural hydration! While I never wash my face with hot water I’m not doing any favors to the rest of my body by steaming out my own natural hydration. There are products that can help though (if you’re like me and will probably not stop turning the dial to hot, hot, hot). For your face, there are plenty of micellar gentle liquid cleansers that don’t even require you to rinse! However, if you are like me and you cake and bake your makeup, that just won’t cut it. First its makeup removers, cleansers, easy massaging and major moisturizing. For the rest of your body wash with a cleansing oil that has soybean oil which helps fortify and protect your skin’s own moisture barrier. Make sure you are also massaging your facial moisturizer on to your face as opposed to rubbing it. Massaging your skin care on to your skin helps to reach deep into the rough patches of your dry skin. No more raisin face! :p

Choose Your Makeup Wisely When It Comes To Dry Skin!

Carina Hernandez is the lead makeup director at Event Makeup in San Diego, CA and today she is divulging her favorite makeup products that keep her skin dewy during the cold weather (yes, during the tiny bit of cold weather they get in southern CA ).

Buy hydrating makeup to avoid dry skin. Makeup products can definitely play a part in having dry skin or even making you look like you have dry skin (even if you really don’t). Try creamy makeup that contains hydrators like glycerin or vitamin E. If you don’t know where to start or what products to try, keep reading below!

I got to sit down with the head stylist at Event Makeup in San Diego, Carina Hernandez who gave us some awesome tips on what makeup to try!

“I recommend starting with the “Too Faced Hangover Primer,” it has coconut water, probiotics and electrolytes which is all great for dehydrated, dry patchy skin.” Following that primer she said to use the “Too Faced Born This Way” foundation. This foundation gives a natural finish. Another option is the, “It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream, SPF 50+” it will be your one & only all-in-one: spf + moisturizer + full coverage foundation. You can set it with a soft focus powder like, “Too Faced Cocoa Powder” to blur any imperfections or if you want to maintain the “dewy look” set your t-zone with a translucent powder like “Bye Bye Pores” by “It Cosmetics.”
