There are plenty of adventures to be had within your own country’s borders.  Here are some big adventures you can have in your own backyard. So, U.S. travelers, here is a short list of some of the National Parks that are the least frequently visited in the United States.

• Voyageurs National Park:  Minnesota.

This park is found in Minnesota and is made up of over 40% waterways leaving visitors with the feeling of exploring their own private island.  The lakes offer winter options when frozen and in the spring, fresh berries can be found lining the shores.

• Pinnacles National Park:

This park in California is made up of peaks.  It also contains a surprising number of wildflowers, and amazing stargazing vistas.  Keep in mind when visiting this park that temperatures in the summer often exceed 100 degrees.

• Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas.

Guadalupe Mountains provide the canyons and the mountains in one magnificent park. The “Guadalupe Peak” trail which takes visitors to the top of Texas offers glorious views from every angle.

• Great Basin National Park: Nevada:

If you want another spot perfect for stargazing, Great Basin is the spot for you.  Elevation changes make this park diverse in flora and fauna and caves bring in a previously unexplored element. Variety in this park also make it home to many wildlife species.

• Congaree National Park: South Carolina.

This park is home to the largest expanse of old growth forests in the United States as well as the eastern U.S.’s tallest trees. This park shows off the beautiful fireflies that call this part of the country home. It also has elevated walkways so that even when flooding occurs the park is still 90% accessible.

•  Dry Tortugas National Park: Florida.

This park is about 70 miles outside of Key West Florida and includes a chain of seven small islands. It offers shipwrecks and marine life for the discerning traveler.  It additionally offers a 19th century fort which can be used for camping and exploring.  This park also has a beautiful view of the night sky stretching over the Caribbean.

• North Cascades National Park: Washington.

This park has the most views of  glaciers outside of Alaska.  However, even with its steep terrain and snowy conditions much of the year there are activities for all skill levels and adventure types.

• Isle Royal National Park:  Michigan.

This park is located on an Island in the middle of Lake Superior and it is only reachable by boat or seaplane. There are many additional remote locations that can be reached by boat, as well as trails, forests and shorelines that are not only beautiful, but will challenge your sense of adventure. Scuba diving is popular at this park as well due to the number of sunken boats in the area.

Be sure when planning your trip that you check with the parks to ensure they are open and plan to remain open for the summer season. Also be aware that booking and safety measures may be altered for a time.

4. St. Louis, Missouri

Whenever you think about St. Louis, everything always conjures up an image of the Gateway Arch. While it is impressive to see in person, that’s not all that St. Louis has to offer. There are breweries, clubs, restaurants, parks, art exhibits. Not to mention that Six Flags has a location in St. Louis for those more adventurous and have a love of rollercoasters. Two of the best excursions in St. Louis, have to be the City Museum and the Science center. Both locations are great for families and are positively massive. For those of you who like to enjoy the sun, however, St. Louis has plenty of music festivals and their own botanical gardens and a zoo. There’s bound to be something that will pique the interest of everyone in the family.

5. The Emerald Coast, Florida

Okay, I’m going to be the first to admit that I’m 1000% biased here on this one since I technically live on the Emerald Coast. To me, being just a short drive to the beach is an everyday occurrence. But the white sand of the Emerald Coast just cannot be missed. There are dozens of nature reserves and national parts — both on the water and off — to explore if you’re a nature lover. The food is also amazing. No matter where you go along the coast, there’s always an opportunity to try freshly caught seafood. There are even fish markets that you can go to that makes fresh sushi and steamed shrimp on sight so you can enjoy it as fresh as possible. Anywhere along the Gulf Coast is sure to set your heart at ease and your mind on the water.

6. Portland, Oregon

Portland has become one of the most famous cities in the United States, so it had to be added to this list. With plenty of gardens and parks to visit, there are little pockets of nature across the city. There are numerous botanical gardens and arboretums to keep you outside. If speed is more your style, check out the Portland International Speedway to catch an event. It boasts nearly 550 events a year, so you’re bound to be able to find one. The art community in Portland has been ever expanding as well so you can check out a museum or craft fair within the city limits frequently throughout the year. If you want something a little different and that can give you glimpses of a plethora of city experiences, Portland will be an excellent option for you.

Planning a vacation need not be difficult, especially when you have a whole continent full of places to see. Think outside the box and experience things in a whole new light. Take a trip to a new city and see what it has to offer you — from art and food to a full gambit of cultural experiences. Plans seldom come through intact for any venture, especially where so much of a good time riding on things going just perfectly. It’s always wise to have a backup plan when you find yourself traveling, but don’t let things become too rigid. If you’re at all like me, you function best with lists and plans, and if things change abruptly, it makes you cranky. There will be a time when you need just to throw it out and go with the flow of your trip. You won’t be able to control everything, so don’t feel like you have to.

If you’re traveling alone, make sure that you have a contact back home.

This one is more of a safety tip, but should be said. If you’re traveling alone, have a contact back home that you check up with periodically throughout the day. When you’re in a place that you don’t know at all, situations can turn dire in a split second. While no one wants to overthink about it, have a contingency plan in place with your contact, leaving them essential phone numbers in the case of an emergency. Hospitals close to where you’ll be traveling, and the numbers for the authorities are great places to start. If you’re going overseas, perhaps listing the embassies as well. It never hurts to be careful.

Don’t make your vacation a slog.

This may come as a shock to you, but vacations can be exhausting. Especially if you’re shoving any and all available opportunities into your schedule. If you’re running for 5 days or more on vacation time and you haven’t scheduled the time actually to relax, you need to reassemble your schedule. And, no, working while you’re away doesn’t count either. If you’re a book lover, curl up in a sunny window and read. Take a slow turn around a museum or just spend a single day in bed watching crappy online videos or Netflix. You need a little bit of time to recharge those batteries so you can get back to enjoying your vacay.

Do at least one touristy thing while you’re away.

Sometimes, nothing feels better than being a full-on tourist in a place you’ve never been. Some locals will even love the fact that you are visiting their fantastic home, especially when they discover that you’re a first-time traveler. Ask them where their favorite spots are, to get a genuine feel for the place, but make time for at least one thing that you know those locals never see. Take a ghost tour or brewery tour. Go on a guided hike with a dozen or so other tourists and have fun.

Document the experience somehow.

Maybe this is the stationary obsessed nerd in me, but when I travel anywhere, I make sure to document it in some way. This doesn’t have to apply to just the first-time travelers out there either! On my family’s last trip up the coast, I made sure to stop any time we were close to the water, and I collected seashells. I even got a piece of sea glass to go with it. One of my friends is an artist. She paints watercolor postcards and writes on the back something that she wants to remember about the place she painted. Whether it is pictures, journal entries, stones you pulled from any body of water you visit, find some way to document your experience. You’re lucky to be able to experience the world that you’re in that way, having something tangible will help you to remember it.

The first time you venture out into the world is one of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have. It can be a little nerve-wracking to step into a new experience as a first-time traveler, but by remembering these five tips, it might help to bring you a bit more comfort on your journey, not to mention giving you the permission actually to enjoy it. This can get a little tricky to plan if you have drastically different schedules. It’ll definitely be worth it, however, if you can get a good-sized group going. Just keep in mind, group rates can vary between 10 and 15 people so double check before you set a plan in stone. This can help stretch your dollar a bit more and give you the opportunity to share these experiences with friends.

When can you go?

Pull out your calendar and figure out a time when you can go. Research your potential vacation spots and find out if anything is going on. Some festivals will have special options for food and drinks and experiences. However, the trade-off is that lodging in these places might be more expensive. Places like Disney World have a reasonably lengthy offseason and getting a hotel (not owned by Disney, mind you) will be cheaper. Bonus: The rides will have almost non-existent lines, and you won’t need to get those extra fast passes. If you look for deals like this everywhere you go, you can cut down on the spending big time.

Do your research on budget vacations

If you put your nose to the grindstone, you can find even more discounts for your budget vacation. There are optimum times to make purchases when you’re gearing up for a trip. For airline tickets, the best dates to book the tickets vary depending on the season, location, and the time of day you plan to fly. Hotel rooms and flights can sometimes be bundled together for an additional discount. Don’t forget to check with your employer to see if you can get discounts and deals through them as many companies offer travel benefits. You might even be able to dig up some extra savings, with online sales on discount travel websites.

While you’re away, keep your eyes and ears open

My grandparents, when they travel, always make a list of places that they want to go to when they were visiting — breweries, tours, anything that they would usually otherwise have to pay for. They swing by on their way to another, typically free, event and ask if there’s an upcoming tour and if they have any available spots and to call them if they’re willing to give a discount on whatever tickets they couldn’t sell. Most of the time, they get no call. But on at least half a dozen times, they got a full vineyard tour, symphony seats, and wine tasting for free because they couldn’t fill all the spots or seats that would have otherwise remained vacant.

It can never hurt to ask, and the worst that they can say is no. Just always remember to be polite. Many of these places are businesses and do have to make money. If they turn you away, it has nothing to do with you, just their bottom line. Be gracious and grateful no matter the outcome.

Your skin will be set with my favorite skin care set- Josie Maran Argan Skincare Ritual Set, $24. The Josie Maran set feels and smells amazing (It even tastes good too, lol! However I don’t recommend trying it but let me tell you, if it gets on your lips and you happen to taste it, it has a great taste!)! I would only recommend this set though for someone with dry or normal skin types, not oily as it’s oily in nature. To keep the rest of your body silky smooth pick up some L’Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil with Almond Oil $9.50.
