When it comes to achieving a radiant glow and maintaining good health, many people focus on skincare routines and fitness plans. But what about the everyday choices we make that quietly sabotage our efforts? There are plenty of bad habits that affect beauty and health without us even realizing it. From how we sleep to what we eat, some of the most common lifestyle patterns can age us faster and compromise our well-being.

1. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Lack of quality sleep not only leaves you feeling drained, but it also shows on your face. Dark circles, puffiness, and dull skin can all be linked to poor sleep habits. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can increase the signs of aging and weaken your immune system. Sleep is when your body repairs itself, so skimping on rest affects both your internal health and outer glow. For dark circles, check out this post: How to Reduce Dark Circles and Puffiness Under Your Eyes

2. Smoking and Excessive Drinking

Smoking decreases oxygen flow to the skin and breaks down collagen, leading to premature wrinkles and a tired, uneven complexion. Alcohol, on the other hand, dehydrates the body and skin, making you look older and more worn out over time. Both habits also increase the risk of serious health conditions, including heart disease and cancer.

3. Neglecting Water Intake

One of the simplest bad habits that affect beauty is not drinking enough water. Hydration plays a crucial role in flushing out toxins, keeping your skin plump, and promoting healthy digestion. When you’re dehydrated, your skin may appear dry, flaky, or inflamed—and your body may feel sluggish.

4. Poor Diet Choices

Eating too much processed food, sugar, and unhealthy fats can cause inflammation, acne breakouts, and even hair loss. A diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats helps support clearer skin, stronger nails, and shiny hair. What you eat truly reflects on the outside, so nutrition shouldn’t be overlooked when considering habits that affect your beauty and health. For more on this, check out this post: The Impact of Nutrition on Your Skin and Hair

5. Skipping Sunscreen

Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature aging. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can harm your skin, leading to wrinkles, sunspots, and increased risk of skin cancer. Applying SPF daily is a must if you’re serious about avoiding bad habits that affect beauty.

6. Stress and Lack of Self-Care

Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can trigger breakouts, hair thinning, and even digestive issues. Over time, stress takes a toll on your mental and physical health, draining your natural vibrancy. Practicing mindfulness, taking breaks, and indulging in self-care routines can work wonders in reversing the effects.

Sometimes, it’s not just what you do to look and feel your best, but what you stop doing that makes the difference. Recognizing and eliminating the bad habits that affect beauty and health is a crucial step toward a more radiant, energized, and confident version of yourself. So, take a look at your daily routine—what might you need to let go of for the sake of both your looks and your well-being?

Dark circles and under-eye puffiness can make you look tired and aged, even if you feel fine. These common concerns can result from lack of sleep, stress, genetics, aging, or lifestyle habits. While there’s no magic cure, there are several effective ways to reduce dark circles and puffiness under your eyes and restore a refreshed, youthful appearance.

1. Prioritize the Power of Sleep

One of the most important factors in keeping your under-eye area looking fresh is the power of sleep. When you don’t get enough rest, blood vessels under the eyes dilate, leading to dark circles. Aim for at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to allow your body to repair and rejuvenate. Elevating your head with an extra pillow can also prevent fluid retention, reducing morning puffiness.

2. Hydrate and Nourish Your Skin

Dehydration can make dark circles and puffiness more noticeable. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep your skin hydrated and plump. Incorporating eye creams with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and caffeine can further help to reduce dark circles and puffiness under your eyes by improving circulation and promoting skin elasticity.

3. Use Cold Compresses

Cold therapy is one of the fastest ways to reduce under-eye swelling. Applying a cold spoon, chilled cucumber slices, or a cold gel eye mask can constrict blood vessels, helping to minimize puffiness. Green tea bags soaked in cold water and placed over the eyes can also be beneficial due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Massage and Lymphatic Drainage

Gentle facial massage and lymphatic drainage techniques can stimulate circulation and reduce fluid buildup under the eyes. Use your fingertips or a jade roller to lightly massage the under-eye area in circular motions. This promotes blood flow and helps drain excess fluids that contribute to puffiness.

5. Reduce Salt and Alcohol Intake

Excess salt and alcohol can lead to dehydration and water retention, both of which worsen under-eye puffiness. Reducing your intake of salty foods and alcohol, especially before bedtime, can help maintain a more refreshed and de-puffed appearance.

6. Incorporate Self-Care Rituals

Stress and fatigue can take a toll on your skin, making dark circles and puffiness more prominent. Engaging in self-care rituals such as meditation, yoga, or skincare routines can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Taking a few minutes each day to care for your skin and overall well-being can have a long-term positive impact on your appearance.

7. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

UV exposure can worsen dark circles by breaking down collagen and making the under-eye skin thinner. Always wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat when spending time outdoors. Using an SPF-infused eye cream can provide additional protection against premature aging and hyperpigmentation.

8. Try Natural Remedies

Certain natural ingredients can help brighten and soothe the under-eye area. Some effective options include:

Aloe vera gel – Hydrates and soothes sensitive under-eye skin.

Almond oil – Rich in vitamin E, helps to nourish and lighten dark circles.

Turmeric paste – Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it can help reduce puffiness when applied as a mask.

While dark circles and puffiness may not disappear overnight, consistent care and lifestyle adjustments can make a noticeable difference. By prioritizing the power of sleep, staying hydrated, practicing self-care rituals, and using effective skincare treatments, you can gradually reduce dark circles and puffiness under your eyes. Incorporate these habits into your routine to maintain a refreshed, well-rested appearance every day.

Makeup can be a powerful tool to enhance your features and give you a youthful glow—but when used incorrectly, it can actually do the opposite. Some common makeup mistakes that are making you look older might be unknowingly aging your face instead of refreshing it. From overly heavy foundation to the wrong lip color, these missteps can add years to your look. The good news? With a few easy fixes, you can maintain a fresh, youthful appearance while still embracing your favorite beauty products.

1. Using Too Much Foundation

Heavy, cakey foundation can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, emphasizing them instead of creating a smooth base. A thick layer of makeup can also make your skin appear dull and mask its natural glow.

The Fix:

Opt for a lightweight, hydrating foundation or a tinted moisturizer that enhances your skin instead of covering it completely. A damp beauty sponge can help blend the product seamlessly for a more natural, radiant finish.

2. Over-Powdering Your Face

While setting powder helps control shine, overdoing it can make your skin look dry, flat, and aged. Excess powder settles into lines and creates a chalky appearance.

The Fix:

Use a finely milled translucent powder only in areas prone to shine, such as the T-zone. If you have dry skin, consider setting your makeup with a hydrating setting spray instead.

3. Ignoring Your Eyebrows

One of the most common makeup mistakes that are making you look older is not doing your eyebrows correctly. Thin, over-plucked eyebrows or overly dark, harshly drawn brows can add years to your face. Sparse brows create an unbalanced look, while overly bold ones can appear unnatural.

The Fix:

Choose a brow pencil or powder that matches your natural hair color and use light, hair-like strokes to fill in sparse areas. A tinted brow gel can also add volume and definition without looking harsh.

4. Skipping Blush (or Using the Wrong Shade)

Blush adds warmth and life to your complexion, but the wrong shade or application can make you look older. Brownish or overly dark blush can create a dull appearance, while skipping it entirely can leave your face looking flat.

The Fix:

Choose peachy, pink, or coral-toned blushes that complement your skin tone. Apply it lightly to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward for a lifted effect.

5. Applying Heavy Eyeliner

Thick, dark eyeliner on the lower lash line can make eyes look smaller and drag the face downward. It can also emphasize crow’s feet and shadows around the eyes.

The Fix:

Use a soft brown or gray liner instead of black for a more natural definition. Focus on the upper lash line to create a lifted look, and consider tightlining (lining the waterline) for subtle definition.

6. Choosing the Wrong Lipstick Shade

Dark, matte, or overly brown lipsticks can make lips look thin and aged. Dry, cracked lips also contribute to an older appearance.

The Fix:

Go for creamy, hydrating lipsticks in soft pinks, nudes, or berry shades. A little lip gloss can add volume and a youthful glow. Exfoliate lips regularly and use a moisturizing balm to keep them smooth.

7. Neglecting Skincare Before Makeup

Skipping moisturizer and primer can leave skin looking dull and makeup sitting unevenly, which enhances fine lines.

The Fix:

Always start with a hydrating moisturizer and primer before applying makeup. This smooths the skin and ensures a flawless application. Look for primers with light-reflecting properties for added radiance.

8. Ignoring Budget Beauty Hacks

You don’t have to spend a fortune on high-end makeup to achieve a youthful look. Many drugstore brands offer quality products that work just as well.

The Fix:

Look for budget beauty hacks like using a hydrating drugstore concealer as an eye brightener or a cream blush as a multi-use lip and cheek tint. These little tricks can keep your makeup routine effective and affordable.

Final Thoughts

Avoiding these makeup mistakes that are making you look older can instantly refresh your appearance and bring back a youthful glow. By choosing the right foundation, softening your makeup application, and focusing on hydration, you can enhance your natural beauty without adding years to your look. The key is to keep your makeup routine fresh, light, and well-balanced—because feeling and looking youthful should never be complicated!

As the temperature drops and winter sets in, the crisp air brings with it a host of challenges for our skin. The cold weather, coupled with harsh winds and indoor heating, can lead to dryness, redness, and overall skin discomfort. In this Winter Skincare Survival Guide, we’ll explore effective strategies to protect your skin during the cold season, ensuring a healthy and radiant complexion all winter long.

Hydration is Key

The dry air during winter can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Combat this by staying well-hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and incorporate hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges into your diet. Consider using a humidifier indoors to add moisture to the air, preventing your skin from drying out.

Gentle Cleansing

Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn’t strip away the skin’s natural oils. Avoid hot water, as it can further contribute to dryness. Instead, use lukewarm water for cleansing to retain the skin’s moisture.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Invest in a rich and emollient moisturizer to create a protective barrier against the cold. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and shea butter to lock in moisture. Apply moisturizer immediately after cleansing to seal in hydration.

Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable

Sunscreen is not just for the summertime. UV rays are present year-round, and the reflection off snow can intensify their impact. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it to exposed areas, especially the face, before heading outdoors.

Exfoliate Wisely

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, promoting a more radiant complexion. However, be mindful not to over-exfoliate during the winter, as it can exacerbate dryness. Use a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week to maintain smooth and healthy skin.

Protect Your Lips

The delicate skin on your lips is particularly susceptible to dryness and chapping in cold weather. Use a nourishing lip balm with ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or coconut oil to keep your lips hydrated and protected.

Layer Up

Just as you layer your clothing to stay warm, consider layering your skincare products. Start with a hydrating serum, followed by a moisturizer, and finish with a protective layer like an occlusive balm to seal in moisture.

Mindful Wardrobe Choices

Protect your skin from harsh winds by wearing scarves, hats, and other winter accessories. Opt for breathable fabrics to avoid irritation, and make sure to cover exposed skin during extremely cold temperatures.

Stay Active

Regular exercise boosts blood circulation, promoting healthier skin. Whether it’s an indoor workout or a winter stroll, staying active can help maintain a rosy and radiant complexion.

TLC for Sensitive Areas

Pay special attention to sensitive areas like the hands and feet, which can become dry and cracked during the winter. Use a nourishing hand cream and moisturizing socks to keep these areas soft and protected.

By incorporating these strategies to protect your skin during the cold season, you can shield your skin from the harsh effects of the cold season. Remember, consistency is key, and adapting your skincare regimen to the changing weather will help you maintain a healthy and glowing complexion throughout the winter months.

In our pursuit of beauty, we often turn to an array of skincare products and hair treatments, but the foundation for a radiant appearance goes beyond topical solutions. The saying “you are what you eat” holds true, and the impact of nutrition on your skin and hair health is profound. In this article, we explore the vital connection between the food we consume and the beauty that radiates from within.

The Skin-Hair-Nutrition Connection

Our skin and hair reflect our overall health, and the nutrients we provide our bodies play a pivotal role in maintaining their vitality. Essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants obtained through a well-balanced diet contribute to the health and appearance of our skin and hair.

1. Vitamins for Vibrant Skin

Vitamin C: Known for its antioxidant properties, vitamin C supports collagen production, promoting skin elasticity and preventing signs of aging.

Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin E protects the skin from environmental damage and helps maintain a healthy complexion.

Vitamin A: Essential for skin cell turnover, vitamin A supports the renewal of skin cells, contributing to a smoother and more youthful appearance.

2. Minerals for Hair Strength

Iron: Anemia, often caused by iron deficiency, can lead to hair loss. Incorporate iron-rich foods like spinach, lentils, and lean meats to support hair health.

Zinc: Essential for hair growth, zinc helps maintain the health of hair follicles and prevents hair loss. Include sources such as nuts, seeds, and whole grains in your diet.

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Skin and Scalp

Omega-3s: Found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, omega-3 fatty acids contribute to skin hydration, reduce inflammation, and support a healthy scalp.

4. Hydration for Skin Elasticity

Water: Staying adequately hydrated is crucial for skin elasticity and overall skin health. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day to maintain hydration from the inside out.

5. Antioxidants for Overall Skin Health

Coconut Oil and How It Can be Used

Coconuts, apart from having numerous health benefits, coconut oil has many uses. The oil in it is considered a perfect additive to your skin and hair. Coconut oil is body-friendly, which means you can consume it orally and it has no effect on your heart. Coconut oil is colorless and mostly tasteless, and it is usable in both refined and unrefined state. In the case of your beauty routine, you should turn to coconut oil, and it will not disappoint, bearing in mind the long shelf life the beauty products out of it have. There are many coconut oil beauty uses you will discover after reading this article as illustrated below.

Video Overview:

Makeup Remover

Makeup is the main beauty routine for women, but at times when you try to remove it using the common ways, it can be impossible. Therefore, you can use coconut oil, and it removes even the most resistant waterproof mascara. You only need a cotton pad to apply the coconut oil on the face, and the makeup will melt away.

Breath Freshener

Coconut oil is enriched with antibacterial as well as antifungal properties needed to refresh your breath. You can gargle a spoonful of the oil for twenty seconds, and this will fight off the germs in your mouth giving you whiter teeth, healthier gums as well a fresher breath. These are crucial coconut oil beauty uses for women planning to boost their celebrity appearances and speech.

Moisturizer

Coconut oil is essential for body moisturizing because of the fatty acids that allow quick absorption on the skin. The oil will make the skin glow, soft and radiant. The oil will also perform the moisturizing role on your face so you can leave it on before applying your makeup.

Coconut oil as Chapstick

If your lips are chapped, most people get chapstick or lip balms, but coconut oil is actually the most effective remedy to use because it remains semi-solid in the normal room temperature and is extra moisturizing.

Eye Creams

If you do not want to overspend on under eye cream, you should consider coconut oil. The eye skin is the most delicate part of your face, and so the coconut oil will keep it safe throughout the day.

Last but not least, use coconut oil as a hair mask.

Coconut oil is great for dry hair or for a flakey scalp. It can be used as a hair mask either 20 minutes before a shower or after a shower and to keep in overnight. Simply massage onto your scalp and hair and relax and let it do its magic.

BEST TRAVEL BEAUTY PRODUCTS…MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR NEXT VACA!

Take the guess work out of shopping for the best travel beauty products by reading below. Shopping list complete!

As a beauty product fanatic and a makeup artist, it’s needless to say that I don’t travel light…by any stretch of the imagination but when space is limited, well, girls got to do what a girls got to do and that usually means swapping your favorite big beauty products for travel sized products instead. Now this can be quiet the cumbrous task because you will quickly find that your favorite products don’t come in a travel size and who wants to try something on a whim… on their skin… during a vacation?! Hello nightmare. This kind of stress is what usually leads to women packing all of their full size beauty products and ending up with spillage like no other. Hello hairspray a la silk shirt. And the puzzle of how to fit what where! Oh the torture! Even the most glamorously experienced travelers are in a constant search for the smallest, thinnest, flattest, most low-maintenance, best travel beauty products out there to maintain their fresh and flawless looks on-the-go. Well don’t fret because we have broken down the best travel beauty products for your next vacation below!

Best Travel Beauty Product #1

There is nothing cuter and better for traveling than this cute little and cleverly named Minimergency Kits, $16 by Pinch Provisions. These little fashionably perfect pouches have it all and they will have you covered from the typical band aid to a safety pin, to earring backs to clear nail polish and 10 more little life savers! There are tons of different options so if your pack can handle it try the bigger ones that carry more goodies. You can even personalize them with what fabric and charm goes on your bag! *The only thing I would add is a wine opener for sure. Although your front desk of wherever you stay will probably have one, it’s way easier to not have to worry about it. This constitutes as a beauty need because….uh…the anti…oxidants…found in wine, uh ya!

Best Travel Beauty Product #2

Brows are very important. Not only are big, think, perfectly on point brows ‘in’ right now but they can also make or break your look. So whether you are traveling or not this brow kit should be in your kit at all times! You never know when you are going to have a brow-mergency! Check out this Brow Kit by none other than Anastasia Beverly Hills, $65.

Best Travel Beauty Product #3

I’d have to say this is currently all beauty editors’ favorite travel beauty product at the moment. Celebrities, all the magazines, and the girl-next-door alike are all raving about this fun little invention! Prospector Co. has made some towel tablets! Place one of the tablets under some warm water and viola, a towel will appear like magic! Genius! Find this gem at Prospector Co. Compressed Towel Tablets, $5.

Best Travel Beauty Product #4

Keep your hair fresh with this great set from Dry Bar at Nordstrom, $30. This Dry Bar set also comes with a shampoo that helps prolong your blowout, the ‘Detox Dry Shampoo’ and the ‘The Chaser Shine Cream’ that will leave your hair shiny, beautiful and frizz-free.

Best Travel Beauty Product #5

Trendy empty containers from Bloomingdales to pour your favorite products into by Bobbi Brown called ‘The Containers’, $15.

THE best lotion that you well ever smell from Dessert Essence in a travel size, $2.99. I swear I get more compliments with this lotion on that any perfume I’ve ever worn! Plus it’s coconut…so vacationey!

Best Travel Beauty Product #7

Case your hair isn’t completely lasered off then you can’t forget shaving cream! Hotels have the worst selection ever for razors and cream so planning ahead is a must otherwise you end up nicking yourself with a crap razor and smelling like a man. Check out MALIN+GOETZ Vitamin E Shaving Cream – Travel Size, $8. Also try this great disposable razor made of recycled material! The Triple Razor System | Handle & 2 Blades, $8.50, also found at Whole Foods!

The Josie Maran set feels and smells amazing (It even tastes good too, lol! However I don’t recommend trying it but let me tell you, if it gets on your lips and you happen to taste it, it has a great taste!)! I would only recommend this set though for someone with dry or normal skin types, not oily as it’s oily in nature. To keep the rest of your body silky smooth pick up some L’Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil with Almond Oil $9.50.

Dry Skin Rx-The Weather Outside is Frightful- Prep Your Skin

Protect your face from getting dry skin this season, protect from the cold harsh elements. Basically, this year, keep your skin from becoming a dried up, parched, raisin face!

DRINK UP FOR DRY SKIN!

Flavor your H20 to make drinking water a more desirable thing to do all day!

I am going to start with the number one tip that you already know to do. You’ve heard it time and time again but drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated will do far more wonders for your face then any cream or technique that’s popular at the moment. Just like the rest of your body, your skin needs water, it’s an organ made up of cells which are made of water. Without water your skin will turn on you. It will become very tight and dry. When your skin becomes tight and dry it can form wrinkles so much easier. Wrinkles and dry skin is the enemy and the #1 antidote is right there at your fingertips…water! Now there is some debate on how much water you should drink, the old standard was always 8 glasses a day but that actually falls short from today’s standards according to IOM, the Institute of Medicine. An average of 11 cups per day for women and 15 cups for men is now considered the healthy mark. Unfortunately, the water you consume caters to all your other organs first so you really need to get that full amount so that it will fully hydrate you so that your skin gets the maximum benefit.

So how can you manage to keep track of all that water you are drinking? Well instead of tracking every drip just make sure to drink water with every meal and a few in between and this should keep you close. The best rule of thumb is to stay hydrated enough to not have to feel thirsty at some point during the day. Once your body is thirsty, it’s telling you that you left it dry a bit too long and that it’s not hydrated enough and needs water pronto.

This one is one that I am personally guilty of doing. I like ridiculously hot showers. Ridiculously hot. Especially, when the weather is cold. The hot water warms up my body and even if I step out into an air conditioned area I still feel so warm but… it’s not helping me keep that dewy skin look that I love so much. Too much hot water helps evaporate your skin’s natural hydration! While I never wash my face with hot water I’m not doing any favors to the rest of my body by steaming out my own natural hydration. There are products that can help though (if you’re like me and will probably not stop turning the dial to hot, hot, hot). For your face, there are plenty of micellar gentle liquid cleansers that don’t even require you to rinse! However, if you are like me and you cake and bake your makeup, that just won’t cut it. First its makeup removers, cleansers, easy massaging and major moisturizing. For the rest of your body wash with a cleansing oil that has soybean oil which helps fortify and protect your skin’s own moisture barrier. Make sure you are also massaging your facial moisturizer on to your face as opposed to rubbing it. Massaging your skin care on to your skin helps to reach deep into the rough patches of your dry skin. No more raisin face! :p

Choose Your Makeup Wisely When It Comes To Dry Skin!

Carina Hernandez is the lead makeup director at Event Makeup in San Diego, CA and today she is divulging her favorite makeup products that keep her skin dewy during the cold weather (yes, during the tiny bit of cold weather they get in southern CA ).

Buy hydrating makeup to avoid dry skin. Makeup products can definitely play a part in having dry skin or even making you look like you have dry skin (even if you really don’t). Try creamy makeup that contains hydrators like glycerin or vitamin E. If you don’t know where to start or what products to try, keep reading below!

I got to sit down with the head stylist at Event Makeup in San Diego, Carina Hernandez who gave us some awesome tips on what makeup to try!

“I recommend starting with the “Too Faced Hangover Primer,” it has coconut water, probiotics and electrolytes which is all great for dehydrated, dry patchy skin.” Following that primer she said to use the “Too Faced Born This Way” foundation. This foundation gives a natural finish. Another option is the, “It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream, SPF 50+” it will be your one & only all-in-one: spf + moisturizer + full coverage foundation. You can set it with a soft focus powder like, “Too Faced Cocoa Powder” to blur any imperfections or if you want to maintain the “dewy look” set your t-zone with a translucent powder like “Bye Bye Pores” by “It Cosmetics.”

Guys usually don a tux, while the girls typically find an evening gown in an array of colors. However, there’s no need to go textbook with style. Here’s a guide to creating your own completely couture prom outfit.

The magazines always show off the season’s best. It’s a great jumping off point to get ideas and see what colors and styles are on-trend. Both males and females alike can use fashion magazines and online articles to get ideas flowing. But what is your unique style? A little creative inspiration can lead to the perfect outfit for the night, that’s a creation all your own.

Celebrities often have a hand in what the ladies want for their prom dresses, shoes and accessories. But it doesn’t just have to be a Kristin Stewart, Jennifer Lopez or Miley Cyrus inspired look. Be sure to keep outfits age appropriate, after all it is a high school event with most students being under the age of 18. Instead of going risqué and stepping into a realm of outfits that aren’t ‘your age’, focus on different looks in Hollywood.

The starlets of classic cinema are a great place to start. Create a polished feminine look from the fashion influences of stars like Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor or Marilyn Monroe. Pearls and black patent shoes add a retro twist, as well as adding red lips. Find a black satin gown and a faux fur bolero jacket, and you’ll look like you belong on the red carpet. Adding soft curls completes the look. Keep the style young and fresh by adding a curled ponytail with a bouffant in the front. Doing the lips in a bright red gloss instead of a matte finish completes the look in an age-appropriate way. For a modern-day interpretation, watch ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, and pay close attention to Anne Hathaway’s post-makeover fashions.

Rocker chic can also be a fun and funky way to express your prom style. Starting with the dress, find something that can be accessorized in an edgy way. A knee-length black silk or satin number with faux leather accents, a babydoll style with a faux leather jacket over it, or a polka dot or striped number can all be played up well. Play with prints, including zebra or leopard. The next mission is to find a great pair of ankle boots. This will keep the legs long while staying within your sassy style. A pointed pair of pumps in a bright hue or leopard print will work just as well. Think of Betsey Johnson, Debbie Harry, Kat Von D or Gwen Stefani for inspiration. Bright colors like hot pink or red work great on the lips, nails or for accessories. Fishnet tights complete that edgy look, and offset those with a rhinestone bracelet or earrings. Long hair in waves or a high bun will keep the style a bit more elegant.

Who wouldn’t want to be a princess for a day? Many girls wear pink or pastels hues for prom, some even with a tiara. But make the princess look more polished and all your own by choosing a more neutral palette. Picking a long dress in a chiffon, taffeta or that has plenty of tulle in the bottom always says princess. However, choosing a hue like champagne, soft pink or black will add elegance instead of looking childlike. Ruching on the top of the gown or a layering of light materials like tulle and satin also add a modern flair. Accessorize with pieces that are monochromatic, with just a little sparkle. If wearing a champagne color, pick rose gold jewelry and makeup that is light and sunkissed with bronze and light shimmer. This makeup palette will also work with a black dress, which you may want to accessorize with silver or gold. Keep the shoes neutral as well, or metallic that reflects the same tones found in your jewelry. You’ll absolutely enchant your date.

Prom only comes once a year, so choose a unique style that is all your own. These tips will ensure you make a grand entrance to your fabulous evening.
